Smallholder farmers represent agriculture's foundation, producing approximately eighty percent of the nation's annual food output using primarily manual labour. Increased tractor adoption could dramatically boost food production capacity.
Several obstacles prevent smallholders from accessing farm machinery. Historically, equipment access depended on political connections and social networks, disadvantaging unconnected farmers. High rental costs and insufficient hiring locations further restrict access.
The Tractor Owners & Hiring Facilities Association of Nigeria addresses this through its hiring and booking agent model. Agents are located at very accessible points in different communities, making services reachable and enabling proper aggregation of farmer demand. Government intervention on rental-cost regulation could further improve accessibility.
